In 1999-2000 I participated in NanC Meinhardt's Master's Class at the Shepherdess in San Diego California. While searching for an idea for my class project I was given some fragments of 4000 year-old ancient glass found in Iran. These small pieces spoke to that part of me that rode into steep canyons on a mule for 8 hours to view ancient rock art in the caves of Baja. Creative problems included finding beads that didn't outshine the old glass, and finding ways to combine the old glass and the beads without using glue. I couldn't picture the end results before I started each piece, but in the process of using the beads in a way to encircle the glass I gradually found a direction. This series of pieces is my way of remembering the ancient people who made, used, and lost these fragments of glass. The culmination of the class was a group exhibit at La Jolla Fiber Art's Gallery. |
